It’s one of those weeks when things have to be done fast. Several meetings, presentations, special occasions, and expectations. That’s how it goes sometimes. So what can we do when we have to move fast?
Don’t respond too quickly to emails. I got an email this morning that annoyed me. I knew I was tired, so as a gift to the sender, I did not reply the way I wanted to. Thankfully, it was just Monday, so I remembered that Sunday’s sermon challenged us to see if we can follow the “golden rule” for just 12 hours.
Do smile more than you usually do. I’ve heard that the simple act of smiling makes us feel better. When I’m super tired, I say out loud in my brain, “Smile. It makes you look more put together!” Try it. It really does work.
Do say something nice on purpose. When exhausted, I usually try to form positive thoughts and express them as much as possible. A good start is, “Good morning! Isn’t this weather wonderful?”
Brain research shows that positive thoughts really do improve mood. I’d like to ramble on, but my time is up!
“The trees in Siberia are miles apart; that is why the dogs are so fast.” Bob Hope
I really dislike eating on the run, but you gotta do what you gotta do lol
It happens to us all!
I laughed at loud when I read your “Don’t” and your first “Do”. Clever advice from your pastor. We tend to forget we’re Christians when we leave the church building and Monday rolls around, don’t we? 😉
Blessings,
Melanie
I wish it weren’t true, Melanie!!! But you are spot on!
My husband won’t put a “Jesus fish” on the car because then he’d have to drive nicer!
Being accountable isn’t all that fun! I agree!
I’m going to start smilng more- from today!
Go for it! It really does help!
The theory or fake it ’til you make it DOES work! Keep it up!
Interesting… Good luck with everything and all. I say add another Do however.
Do: take five minutes every now and again to clear your head. Your brain will thank you with more clarity when you return to work 🙂
I like that addition, Jared! Thanks for the awesome suggestion!
A positive thought and early morning smile makes my day better, more bearable and even may turn out to be a happy day.
As we get old, it helps us to look a little better too!!!
Have you read Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Bright Sided – How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America” ?
Not yet. I will take a look!

i like writing back immediately to emails that annoy me…but keeping them in the draft folder for a day, then revisiting and revising as necessary.
And I thought this post would be about food! Ha! Good tips. Especially the e-mail one. Not only does it help with one’s attitude, but it can help you be more productive. If I responded to all of my e-mails immediately I wouldn’t get anything else done all day!
Have fun with those emails, Crystal! I bet you only write sweet ones!
I do try to smile, like when you take a picture everyone says “smile”, and you do. But then you look at magazines and ads of models and they never smile. They just look at the camera and never smile. Then I think, maybe I should not smile in a picture, the rich famous people never smile.
But I will try to smile at least once daily, like you suggest.
You are funny! It’s a mystery to me that models don’t smile and they make so much money. Since I don’t look like a model, I have to rely on the smile!!!
Great tips 🙂 I have heard those too, but most made the mistake of replying to a frustrating email too quickly. It can be a costly mistake!
That first one is funny–the part about not responding the way you wanted “as a gift to the sender.”
I have done the second one on many occasions. When I use to work at a place that I knew was going to be challenging when it came to everyone’s attitude, I would deliberately walk in with a smile and a “hello” to everyone. Even if other’s did not want to make an effort, I tried to keep that smile on my face throughout the day. It helped ME face the day, and that’s all that mattered.
Good advice.
You are so right! We are just responsible for ourselves and how we react to others!
I must admit, I thought this post was going to be about nutrition. How wrong I was.
Good advice about emailing – the major benefit of communicating by email is that it allows you to think about what you say, but terribly few people take advantage of this!
It’s true! We should be more careful, but now we throw things out there like crazy!!! Thanks for the comment!

Judging from the picture: for a second I was hoping that a “do” would involve ordering one of Pizza Company’s seafood cocktail pizza (an unhealthily delicious abomination that combines crab sticks, broccoli, pineapple, shrimp and cocktail sauce). No I don’t work for Pizza Co. but they sure help me abide by your one don’t and two do’s on those testing days. 🙂
I’ve been here a long time, but still some of the combinations seem foreign to me! Love it here though! Those are huge fish by the way!
Haha….way to catch our attention and flip us into a separate subject. So back onto your main subject line….
And another don’t: Don’t eat fast food period. It’s not worth the empty calories. Bring a snack bag if you know you are going to be on the run or at least make a nutritional decision to at least do Subway! Our health is not worth the risk! 🙂
You are so right, Goodie Girls! I know this fast food is bad for you, but it tasted delicious!!! Thanks for the pep talk!
It’s impossible for me to smile more than I usually do superduper early in the morning. I’m way too tired to look like Heidi Klum! Haha

I agree with waiting to reply to an email until later. As a teacher I often respond to emails in a haste and then reread my response later and cringe. Best. To. Wait.
Great advice. Also stop at traffic lights…your life and someone else’s life depends on it.
By the way, love your blog title!
Good advice, love your blog. Today a tall, skinny, scruffy, gray-haired, long-legged dog, walked righted towards me on a city street to say hi. It’s owner said it was because I smiled at the dog. I had smiled without even knowing it. Sweet.
fast good is no good, only eat them several time one year.
It’s funny that I always do much better the first few days after a sermon as well! If only we could all practice the golden rule! Thanks for the reminder
So true! I like your sock monkey post!
If i said “Good morning! Isn’t this weather wonderful!” it would be taken as sarcasm, particularly here in southeastern New England.
Yes. I hear you guys are freezing there!
Like many of the commenters I try to not eat fast food. But when I do it’s a cake. Much like this one: http://apocalypsecakes.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/inexplicable-blackbird-pie/
Oh WOW! I’ve never seen any cake like that before!
If your schedule “requires” fast food:
DON’T eat it, or
DO find another job, or
DO bring a healthy packed lunch
🙂
Very cute! It would have made a shorter post too!
Thanks for the quick tips — that is another good thing for a busy day!
Wow, this is the perfect post for me to read right now. I’m stressed up to my eyeballs and just about ready for my head to literally start spinning. My new mantra for right now is: Smile, Smile, Smile. …. Ha, that does work 🙂
Hang in there! Hopefully it will pass for all of us!
Positivity is the power with which I succeed. No one can stop me now. I smile and I’m like the top of a mountain and happiness is like a mountain climber who is trapped in a snow cave of joy.
I like to take a deep breath and hold it until I see stars and I’m like: “I’m a star!” I am triumphant. I am re-taking my GED and I will soar like a gibbon. Look at my pencils stacked and sharpened! Positivity is what rocks my world. I am a typhoon of uplifting wind and 80’s rock ballads. I am a tornado that will transport you to a world of Munchkins and love.
I take the time to shower myself with love. I treat myself like a lady that I am courting for marriage. I introduce myself to my parents and then take myself to Denny’s with a youth group and I’m the first one to finish my milk shake so that others don’t feel ashamed if they eat all of theirs too.
“I lift mine eyes up to the mountains where does mine help come from?”
Keep looking up! Never stop!
Your goals can be achieved.

Go for it, Ryan. I hope it works out well.
Great advice and just what the doctor ordered for me.
Forming positive thoughts is a great habit! I’ve always followed that, even when I’m tired. In a snappy mood, I refrain from saying something rude to the other person and try to say something nicer and more pleasant to them. It improves their mood, and mine too.
Smiling is another something I’m fond of. I’m always smiling. ALWAYS. My family and friends call me the smile-freak of the family. I’ve been known to smile at random people on the street. When someone smiles back at you, you feel great and much happier. And I think that this happens to all of us. Remember, sMILEs go a LONG way.

Thanks for the refreshing thoughts! Your everyday muser looks fun! I love books that make me cry!
Funny, I do that in the mornings. Grin while i’m doing my makeup in hopes it makes me happier.
My schedule doesn´t “requires” fast food. But once every 2 weeks I enjoy fast food @ work 🙂
I completely agree with you! Smiling forces you to work some muscles, which releases endorphins, which makes us feel better! And everytime you do for others before you do for yourself, you automatically think of their well being FIRST, which typically makes your own fears and worries go away! That’s something I did with my site back in December…I tried to do a random act of “Christmas” every day, while I blogged about it.
Great post! Kudos on FP!
Ya keeping quite for few minutes and not giving an impulsive reaction is what I learnt from a friend….Ya its difficult esply for a short tempered person like me..but it helps and infact relaxes you while it also pleases the other person.
Well ya I also always priorities the tasks that needs to be done-but not on priority basis-on the do it fast basis. If i have to make a call (thats not so urgent and can wait) that will take 5 mins and also do some research that would take 1 hour (but important and needs to be done by EOD)..I would still make a call and get it done.As that gives a satisfaction of getting things done and makes me feel positive and energised!!!
