Roses are amazing. They grow and show their beauty. Once picked, though it’s been separated from its source of life, it still continues to bloom and open its petals until its last day.
The week before Easter is always a solemn time for me. It must have been an enormous burden to know ahead of time that He was entering the last week. I’ve heard dying people come to grips with the death process and allow it to take them, but the grueling details must have bombarded His mind.
Still, Jesus was careful to teach and to train his disciples up until the final hour. Like a rose, Jesus continued to extend His hand to heal the man who got his ear cut off at Jesus’ arrest. Even on the cross, He showed His mercy to the man hanging beside Him.
As we see the beautiful roses blooming this week, let us think of the thorns put upon the head of Jesus. He continues to give and we are invited to take part in that blessed gift.
“If you enjoy the fragrance of a rose, you must accept the thorns which it bears.” Isaac Hayes
