“Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.” Walt Disney
When I look back through photos, I often see pictures that never should have happened. It would have been much better to have said “cheese.” It’s funny that we use this expression, but it does remind us that if we don’t smile now, we’ll be sorry later.
Recently, InnoCentive ran a challenge asking people to come up with ideas to enhance the camera experience. Since photos capture a moment in time, they’d like to enhance the camera so that it captures more. Perhaps it might also record or somehow capture the feelings behind the picture. My mom always felt that we should somehow capture the smell of a place on something like a scratch and sniff. Of course that would add a more interesting dimension to a photo.
Here are a few fun times when we really should say “cheese:”
1. Photo Booths– What’s more fun than a photo booth? One way Apple got many of us hooked was by letting us play with their computer photo booth. Candid Camera has a funny episode where people are doing crazy things in a photo booth too. What happens between the photos creates an interesting timeline of events.
2. Photo Stickers– In Asia, a popular pastime is to go to a studio and take pictures in various settings. After about ten minutes of fun, everyone chooses their favorite shots and has them made into photo stickers to put on notebooks, mirrors, or lockers. It’s a low-cost way to have a great time and to capture the whole experience on film.
3. Senior Pictures- You really must say “cheese” for this. I’m not sure what happened on my senior picture day. Even my sweet mom admitted that it looked bad. The retake pictures were not better. The second set of pictures were just as bad as the ones before. Unfortunately, that horrible picture is there in the yearbook for all of eternity. Thank goodness I’m not someone famous, because that’s the nasty picture the press would dig up and paste everywhere.
4. Wax Museums– Wax museums can provide a couple of hours of wonderful entertainment. I have a picture shaking hands with Robin Williams that looks incredibly real. If you want to say “cheese,” bring along the whole family, and have fun with your favorite and not so favorite celebrities.
Can you think of a time when you wish you had said “cheese?”
